At Mulga Street Primary School, wellbeing is central to our approach, ensuring students and their families feel supported and valued in every aspect of school life. Our wellbeing initiatives foster a safe and positive environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
The Berry Street Education Framework
Mulga Street Primary embraces the Berry Street Education Framework, which provides our staff with trauma-informed strategies to create a safe, supportive learning environment. This framework helps students feel secure and ready to learn, promoting resilience, personal growth, and a strong sense of community.
Nova, Our Wellbeing Dog
Nova, our friendly wellbeing dog, brings comfort and joy to our school community. She helps students manage stress, build confidence, and develop emotional resilience. Whether it’s a quick cuddle or walking her through the school, Nova’s presence offers a calming influence, making her a beloved member of our wellbeing team.
Nova Tickets
As part of promoting positive choices and behaviours, students can earn Nova Tickets. These are awarded to students who demonstrate our school values and meet behavioural expectations. Nova Tickets encourage students to make good choices, reinforcing the importance of kindness, respect, and responsibility.
The Wellbeing Room
Our Wellbeing Room is a safe space for students to regulate their emotions and engage in calming activities. The room is equipped with sensory tools and quiet spaces, helping students reset when needed. Using the Zones of Regulation curriculum, students learn to identify and manage their emotions effectively, creating a positive impact on their ability to engage in learning.
Zones of Regulation Curriculum
We use the Zones of Regulation curriculum to help students understand and manage their emotions. By recognizing different emotional states and learning strategies to regulate them, students become better able to focus and succeed both academically and socially. Each class has a Regulation Station that students helped co-constructed, filled with tools designed to support their well-being. These tools give students a chance to relax and help their nervous systems feel more balanced, making it easier for them to handle challenges throughout the school day.
Our Wellbeing Leader
Our Wellbeing Leader offers support to both students and families, ensuring everyone feels heard and valued. Whether helping students navigate personal challenges or providing guidance to families, the Wellbeing Leader plays an essential role in maintaining the positive, inclusive culture of our school.
Pastoral Care Worker
Our Pastoral Care Worker (PCW) plays a vital role in fostering a supportive environment for families and students, acting as a bridge to essential services and resources. By working closely with families, they help identify individual needs and connect them with community services, ensuring that each family has access to the support they require. Additionally, the PCW focuses on building students’ confidence and social skills through tailored programs and activities, creating a safe space for personal growth.
School-based Social Worker
At Mulga Street Primary School, our school-based social worker works closely with school staff and leadership to support the wellbeing and engagement of students and families. The social worker focuses on creating an inclusive and culturally respectful environment. Here’s how they help:
- Providing support to students and families through one-on-one sessions, group activities, or special programs based on each family’s unique needs.
- Offering advice and guidance to school staff to better understand and address issues affecting students and their families.
- Working with the school leadership to improve school-wide programs and policies that promote student wellbeing and positive engagement.
The goal of these efforts is to:
- Help address concerns early on, reducing the severity of any challenges related to student wellbeing and engagement.
- Ensure that families are connected with the right services and supports.
- Strengthen the ability of school staff to support student needs, using feedback from families when appropriate.
- Improve policies and programs at the school, with measurable results that reflect positive changes in student wellbeing and engagement.
Through these initiatives, Mulga Street Primary School is committed to fostering a nurturing, supportive environment where students can grow, learn, and succeed both emotionally and academically.
