Our Learning

Curriculum

Our school provides a high quality educational program for all students. Students engage in a broad and balanced curriculum.

English

English empowers us to engage with language and literature in ways that enable us to think and act critically and to make sense of our worlds. By expressing ourselves orally, visually and in writing, we develop our creativity, understanding and love of language and texts.

Health and Physical Education

Health and physical education (HPE) empowers us to value and develop skills, attitudes and knowledge that ignite confidence and motivation to make decisions to lead healthy, active and safe lives. Through HPE, we strengthen our sense of self, connectedness and belonging and our confidence to become competent movers in a range of physical activity environments. As we become critical consumers of information and develop resilience, we take responsibility for ourselves and contribute to the wellbeing of those around us, our communities and environments.

HASS

Humanities and social sciences create a sense of wonder by connecting us to past, present and future human and physical worlds.

We build our understanding of our place and identity in the world informed by diverse human experiences, cultures, beliefs and values.

We are empowered to make responsible and informed decisions as active citizens to create a better future for humanity and the environment.

French

Languages connect us to people, cultures and places; they shape who we are and allow us to interpret, create and share stories. Languages open our minds to diverse perspectives and ways of interacting, and help us become more respectful and powerful communicators.

Mathematics

Mathematics enriches our lives and expands our horizons as we notice, explore and describe the patterns and connections we see in our world. It enables us to accurately and confidently apply mathematical thinking and working skills to engage with challenges in many contexts. Mathematics empowers us to think critically and make informed decisions which help us thrive in our everyday lives. It helps us innovate, continuously shaping our futures, turning problems into opportunities, and discovering the possibilities of the unknown that will sustain and change our world.

Supporting Our Teachers with a Numeracy Coach

At our school, we are always looking for ways to improve the learning experience for our students, especially in key areas like mathematics. To enhance our approach to teaching math, we’ve introduced a Numeracy Coach who works directly with our teachers in the classroom.

What is a Numeracy Coach?

A Numeracy Coach is a specialist who helps our teachers develop even better ways to teach math. They work alongside teachers during lessons, offering support and new ideas to help explain math concepts, use engaging teaching strategies, and ensure our classrooms are places where every child can thrive.

Why is a Numeracy Coach Important?

  • Supporting Teachers: The coach helps our teachers stay up to date with the latest methods for teaching math, making lessons more fun and easier to understand for students.
  • Better Learning for Students: With the coach’s help, lessons are more focused on what each child needs, ensuring that everyone is supported in building strong math skills.
  • Positive Classroom Environment: The coach also supports teachers in managing the classroom so that students can focus on learning in a calm, well-organized space.
  • Continuous Improvement: Rather than occasional training, our teachers receive ongoing support and feedback from the Numeracy Coach, helping them grow and improve throughout the school year.

By working closely with our teachers, the Numeracy Coach plays a big role in making sure that your child receives high-quality math instruction in a supportive and engaging environment.

We’re excited to have this resource at our school and look forward to seeing the positive impact it has on our students’ learning!

Science

Scientific thinking and practices empower us to notice, explore and understand our world, fostering an appreciation of the interconnectedness of complex systems. Science unites curiosity with creativity, and enables us to critically engage with evidence, developing as informed citizens who contribute towards a sustainable future.

Technologies

Technologies learning inspires and equips us with the skills to make, build and grow. Through the Technologies learning area, we learn to develop thoughtful solutions to real-world problems to improve the interconnected wellbeing of ourselves, others, and the planet. Technologies learning empowers us to understand and generate innovation and manage collective action to create preferred futures.

The Arts

The arts spark imagination, curiosity and wonder, enriching our lives with unique opportunities for self-expression and growth. The arts excite, confront, and make us feel something; they reflect our humanity.

Through the arts, we explore perspectives of self and others, nurturing a sense of identity and belonging.

The arts evoke powerful physical, emotional and intellectual responses, inspiring us to think, act and communicate creatively, as we challenge and celebrate our world.

Specialist Programs

We offer a range of Specialist Programs

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

At Mulga Street, our Stephanie Alexander Garden is a hub of learning and creativity, where students immerse themselves in the full cycle of food production. They plant seeds and nurture a diverse garden of vegetables and herbs, watching their efforts bloom into fresh ingredients. Once harvested, these ingredients are transformed into dishes that students prepare and share together, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Adding to this, our students have successfully incubated and hatched their own chickens, and the fresh eggs they produce are also used in the cooking process . This hands-on approach not only teaches valuable cooking skills but also deepens their understanding of sustainability and the joy of growing and sharing food.

The Song Room

Students develop their knowledge and understanding of creative processes, while learning communication, collaboration and intercultural skills. As their confidence grows their wellbeing improves, and they develop a sense of belonging at school. This impacts students’ openness to learning, helping to improve their outcomes.

Teachers are supported with mentoring and professional development to confidently deliver the arts, and to use these skills across the curriculum to help students engage in learning more broadly.

The Song Room program, supported by Scott Maxwell, aims to help teachers learn how to teach music effectively in their classrooms. Research shows a strong link between music involvement and better literacy, numeracy, and well-being outcomes.

This program is designed to support teachers and school communities to improve social and educational results while building a connected school community through arts learning. It is delivered by The Song Room in partnership with the Department for Education and the Music Education Strategy.

Arts learning helps students get more involved in school and supports their social and emotional growth. Through our TLC program, The Song Room aims to help young people become creative, brave, and caring. We give them chances to imagine, share, work together, and express their ideas and feelings through creating and responding to art.

YELP

The Young Environmental Leaders (YELP) program provides an opportunity for primary school students to learn about the local environment by participating in hands-on activities and projects, and develop as leaders within their school community.

Choir

Students in years 4-6 at Mulga Street Primary School have the exciting opportunity to join our school choir, which is part of the South Australian Festival of Music program. This program allows students to develop their vocal skills, perform in a choir, and participate in musical events, fostering a love for music and performance.

Discovery

Every morning, our Junior Primary students begin their day with Discovery time, which includes play and inquiry. Why do we do this? There are several important reasons:

  • Play is how children learn best. Starting the day with play helps reduce their stress levels, making it easier for them to engage in learning throughout the day.
  • It feels familiar to them, as it resembles the kindy environment they already know.
  • Although Discovery may seem “messy” to adults, the activities are carefully planned to connect with the curriculum. This helps students show that they can use the skills and knowledge they’ve learned in the classroom, which is important for meeting the standards of the Australian Curriculum.
  • Most importantly, the activities are led by the students themselves.

What does Discovery look like?

  • Music
  • Oral language
  • Maths/Numeracy

Instrumental Music

Students in years 4-6 at Mulga Street Primary School can participate in our instrumental music program, where they have the opportunity to learn brass or woodwind instruments. Families can hire the instruments through the school, making it easier for students to explore and develop their musical talents.
